Parent Conferences

We are looking forward to parent conferences on Monday and Tuesday!  Please check with your child's teacher if you still need to schedule a time.  Here are some tips for conferences:
  • Ask your child if there is anything that he would like you to discuss with the teacher.
  • Write down everything that you want to talk about at the conference.
  • Arrive promptly or a few minutes early.
  • Offer your perspective.  You are the expert on your child!
  • Ask questions.
  • Take notes about what has been discussed to share with your child.
Also, a reminder that field trip permission slips are due November 16.  You do not need to send in money because this trip is FREE!

Fall is here, and we are learning so much in second grade at Brown Station!  We had a great time on our field trip at Croydon Creek Nature Center.  We learned about soil by looking at the living and nonliving things in soil.  We also went on a nature walk where we saw many natural elements, like soil, rocks, and water!  In science we have begun to learn about Earth's landforms, including mountains, valleys, plains, canyons, and more.  Soon we will find out about bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, rivers, and gulfs.  In social studies we are talking about democracy and leadership.  We will have a lot to talk about as the Presidential election gets closer!  In writing we are publishing our personal narratives.  Finally, in reading we are studying informational text and identifying the main idea.

Our Fall Parade and Party is this Friday.  Look for information about these festivities in your child's folder.  Please talk to your child's teacher if you would like to help out!

Thank you!

Time Flies When You're Having Fun in Second Grade!

Can you believe we've already been in school for over 20 days?!  Here's what we've been up to:
  • In Math, we finished our graphing unit in which we collected, represented, and analyzed data.  Now we are working on place value of 3-digit numbers and understanding the value of a digit.
  • In Science, we learned about rocks, soil, and water.  We will be going on a field trip October 11-12 to learn more about these natural materials.
  • In Reading, we discussed story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution.  We analyzed character traits and how characters respond to challenges.
  • In Writing, we are working on personal narratives.  We are adding details to our writing to make it more interesting to the reader.
  • In Social Studies, we've been developing our collaboration skills and talking about different points of view.
Some reminders:
  • Comprehensive Behavior Handbook contracts are due Friday, September 28!  If you haven't turned yours in yet, please send it in as soon as possible.  Ask you teacher if you need another.
  • Field trip permission slips went home this week.  Please send in the signed forms with $10 cash as soon as you can.
Thank you for your support!

We had a great first week!

What a great week we had!  The students learned about school and classroom rules and routines.  It sure is a lot to remember!  We learned about Trustworthiness and how we can show we are trustworthy at school.  We also learned about collaboration and ways we can work together in groups to accomplish a task.  We will be working on collaboration all quarter as one of our Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS).  You will learn more about TASS and Curriculum 2.0 at Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 11.

Your child(ren) should have brought home some forms for you to fill out.  Please make sure you have sent back:
-Student Emergency Information Form (white)
-Parent\Child Reunification Form (green)
-Free and Reduced-Price Meals Form (white)
-PTA Membership Form (purple)
-Student Comprehensive Behavior Handbook contract (white)  Please keep the handbook at home.
Also, if your child will be attending Terrific Tuesdays or Half Day Hoopla, those forms should be sent to the Activity Center in Gaithersburg.  The address is on the forms.
